The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears
